COSTA / Ocean Biometrics
Pelagic longline fisheries in the Azores targets mostly large pelagic fishes such as swordfish and blue shark, but the impact of the fishery extends to bycatch species such as sea turtles, manta rays, pelagic sharks and others. Currently, data collection on these bycatch species is only possible with fishing observers’ onboard vessels. As an alternative, the project Ocean Biometrics proposes to develop a technical solution in collaboration with FISHMETRICS, a regional I&D company, in order to allow for the collection of data on target species and incidental captures, including biometric data, and making possible to the fishermen to play an active role in the monitoring and protection of these species.
